What are we? CookingMania is Scotland’s first and only purpose-built kids cookery school. We have two ample kitchens in different levels.  We are also a Cooks shop.  Our 200 square metres of kitchen has been inspired, designed and built with you in mind, no cold industrial kitchens but homely and practical. At our demonstration kitchen and at each of the various  specially created work stations there are state of the art induction hobs (link to ‘Why induction hobs? ), an oven, all the cooking utensils and a generous cooking space, ensuring everyone has a hands-on experience, because the only way you can learn to cook is by getting your hands dirty.

Who are we?
We have over 20 years of cooking experience. We are passionate about cooking and eating good food.

Ethel is a ‘cooking mum’. She has spent the last 14 years enjoying cooking for her family.
Ethel has trained at schools and restaurants around the world, including  Hoffmans in Barcelona with Mey Hoffman the only female Michelin starred chef in Barcelona, Divertimenti in London’s fashionable food mecca and also at Aula Gastronomica de l'Emporda cookery school, Costa Brava.

Why a cookery school? Cooking is an essential life skill. We all have to eat, but we shouldn’t just make do with OK food. Eating good food is one of life’s great pleasure and something no one should be denied.
We aim to instil a love of cooking in everyone who comes to our school.

Why a cookery school for kids? Why not! We wanted to show kids how they can cook for themselves and, so, eat really great food. We wanted to have somewhere kids could cook in a fun and safe environment; a place where kids could learn to enjoy making and eating food. We love teaching kids how to cook, they have much more enquiring minds than adults, and are more open to new flavours and ideas.

When are we open? Monday to Sunday, all year except: Christmas, Boxing day and New Year's day.

What is the ratio of staff to children? For up to 10 year olds, the ratio is 1 teacher to 6 children.

Does my child need to know how to cook?
No, that’s what we are here for. Even children who have never cooked before will enjoy getting messy and tasting their own foods.

How old do I need to be to attend a class at CookingMania?
We run courses for school-age children-from 6  to 18 year olds. The classes are split into age groups:
Little Chefs - 6 to 10 year olds
Chefs-in-Training - 11 year olds upwards
But, ultimately, as a parent, you know your child best, so the ages are only a guideline.

What do I need to bring with me? Nothing at all. We will provide all the ingredients and equipment you will need to enjoy your time at CookingMania.

Why induction hobs?
Cleaner, smarter and safer than any other method of cooking. Induction hobs heat up faster and work at almost double of the speed of a gas hob. Unlike gas, there is no risk of overflowing and causing a fire. Our hobs have locks and timers, and only if a suitable pan is placed on the hob will it heat up. Just the pan heats up, rather than the hob, so the kitchen will never become unbearable hot. Once the pan is removed there is very little residual heat on the hob, so cutting the risk of burning hands. It is a ‘greener’ more energy efficient heat source, up to 90% more efficient than gas and electricity.
